Senior Mechanical Designer

Automation & Robotic Systems

Location: Byron Center, MI
Reports To: Lead Design Engineer

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Designer to design complex automation equipment, robotic cells, and integrated assembly systems.

This role is ideal for a highly skilled designer who can independently execute full machine designs while collaborating within an established engineering structure. The position works closely with the Lead Design Engineer and cross-functional teams to deliver robust, high-performance automation solutions.

This is a senior-level individual contributor role with significant technical responsibility.

Key Responsibilities

• Design custom tool packs, standalone machines, and automated assembly lines
• Develop complete 3D models, assemblies, and detailed drawings in SolidWorks
• Execute full mechanical system designs including structural, motion, pneumatic, and robotic integration components
• Design for safety, ergonomics, serviceability, and manufacturability
• Participate in design reviews and collaborate on system architecture decisions
• Support build, debug, and commissioning phases
• Work cross-functionally with controls engineering and manufacturing teams

Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience designing custom automation or special machinery
• Advanced SolidWorks proficiency (large assemblies, configurations, BOM management)
• Experience integrating robotics and automation components into complete systems
• Strong understanding of mechanical drives, pneumatics, and industrial safety standards
• Ability to independently execute projects while working within a collaborative team structure

Preferred:

• BSME preferred, but will consider the right experience

• Experience in assembly line integration
• Exposure to ergonomic system design
• Experience in a custom machine build environment
